April 6th-10th Newsletter


Report Cards

In this week’s homework packet the 3rd quarter grade report is included.  Please take time to review your child’s progress and feel free to ask any questions or express concerns.  The orange sheet should be returned on Friday so that I know that your child showed you his/her grade report.  You may keep the actual grade report for your records.

Talent Show

The school talent show will be held this Friday, April 10th at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.  We have a few students in our class who have signed up to participate. 

Kite for Flight

Just a reminder that the “Kite for Flight Reading Promotion will conclude on April 25th at the Cedar Middle School.  I have enclosed another calendar if your child has misplaced the one that was distributed during SEP week.  Each student that completes a calendar
and takes it to the Cedar Middle School on that day will receive a free kite and the school will be rewarded a contribution from the Cedar City Lion’s Club and other sponsors.

MobyMax

We were able to sign up for a new program that we are utilizing called, “MobyMax”  It is a program that helps students learn new concepts based on their ability and review previously learned material in preparation for the End of Level testing that will occur later this month and in May.  This program is accessible on line from home too.  Your child knows how to access the site and utilize the program.  Students are given rewards for being successful and putting forth extra effort.  We are encouraging our students to utilize this program outside of school as well as during the school day. The kids seem to like the program and are doing a great job of working hard.

Math Tutoring

There will be tutoring after school on Tuesday and Thursday.  We will be focusing on measurement.

 Homework Packets.

After a few weeks of not assigning homework packets, we are back in the routine and like usual, they will be due on Friday along with the reading calendar.

March 23rd-27th Newsletter


Science Fair on Thursday/Friday

Thursday

8:00-8:45 am- Check in and set up
9:00-3:30- Judging
6:30 p.m.- Projects are available for viewing by parents and awards will be given at the P.T.A. meeting in the cafeteria.

Friday 

9:00-11:00- Students can view all projects with their class.
11:00- Clean up projects.

Field Trip on Wednesday

We will be going  on a field trip to the Heritage Center on Wednesday to see the Grammy Award nominated jazz singer, Rene Marie.  We will walk to and from the performance at the Heritage Center.  Please have the permission slips returned by Wednesday morning.

March 2nd-6th Newsletter


Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held this week.  School will be dismissed at 2:30 everyday including Wednesday.  During our conferences we will spend time planning and registering for the middle school.  I hope you have taken the time to decide if your child would like to be in the orchestra, band, or in the arts/music rotation.  The middle school is asking that we turn in the registration forms at the conclusion of SEP Week.  Also, there will be parent survey forms that we encourage you to fill out while you are here.  We use this information to help us in making decisions for the upcoming year and for self improvement.  Your input is valued.

Book Fair

The Book Fair will be in the library this week.  They are offering a “buy one, get one free” deal on all books.  It is a great opportunity to build your child’s library at home.


Dr. Suess’ Birthday Party

Tonight, Monday, March 2nd there will be a fun activity for all families at the city library in honor of Dr. Suess’ birthday.  It will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Cedar City Library in the Park. 303 N. 100 E.

February 23-27th Newsletter


Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be coming up next week.  They are scheduled for the week of March 2nd-6th.  I will be sending an appointment slip home in today’s homework packet so that we can schedule you and your child for next week.  5th graders will be signing up for classes for next year’s middle school.  I would advise you to contemplate if you would like to have your child take band, orchestra, or the arts rotation.  Those are the only electives that are offered for 6th graders.  We will have applications for both middle schools available. Please return the appointment slip as early as possible this week if you cannot make the appointed time. Indicate several times and days so that we can try and work you in at those times.  Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to attend these conferences.

Spelling Bee

The school-wide Spelling Bee will be this Thursday at 2:15.  Our competitors will be Kate Allen, Ezra Stein, and last year’s defending champion, Kealie Sorteberg.  I apologize for the misinformation that was in last week’s newsletter.  I had a “senior moment” and indicated that it was last week.  I apologize for any inconvenience that it may have caused.

SAGE Testing

We have finished the SAGE end of level writing test for the year.  I was very impressed with the effort that our students put forth to do well.  We have some very talented writers in our class.  We should receive their scores back from the state sometime this spring.  As soon as I receive them, we will send a copy home for your records.

February 9th-13th Newsletter


Congratulations to our class Spelling Bee winners, Kealie, Ezra, and Kate.  They will be representing our class in this Thursday’s school wide Spelling Bee.  We wish them luck as they compete against the other 4th and 5th grade winners in our school.

Valentine’s Day Party
We will be having a Valentine’s Day Party on Friday afternoon.  We will have a sign up sheet in class if students want to bring treats.  Here is a list of the students in our class if you want to address Valentines.

A Million Minutes of Reading
Our school reached our first goal of reading a million minutes.  On Wednesday, Mr. Moyle will be arrested and will read to us at 11:00.  We encourage our students and families to continue reading.  Our second million minutes will result in an ice cream party for each class.

SAGE TESTING
We begin the SAGE Writing tests this week.  We will be testing on Tuesday and Thursday.  We encourage all students to get a good night’s rest and make sure you have a filling breakfast so that you can do your best.  The writing portion of this test is given early in the year.  The remainder of the final end of level tests will be given in April and May.
